Years before Gibson’s contoured-body Les Paul guitar came into existence, in Burlington, Iowa in 1941, Orbra Wallace Appleton designed and built his own solid body electric guitar with that distinctive design. Seen below, in the first photo fitted with a single Model 2000 pickup:
